2 Kings 11:21 – 13:9 Unity

by fol CHURCH on October 20, 2020

1st and 2nd Kings used to be one book, showing history over 410 years from Joshua to Esther. 2 Kings shows parts of history when there was a divided kingdom of Israel and Judah. Both went into exile. During both of these books you see the following themes:

  • The sinfulness of the kings and the nations,
  • The conflict of the demands of practical politics and the demands of faith
  • The glory that God gave the obedient kings, remaining in the covenant
  • God’s harshness in judgement and then His grace
  • The conflict between the worship of the Lord and the worship of other Gods.

In this passage we are in the midst of the divided kingdoms; Joash had just ascended to the throne over Jerusalem. I love how this passage starts, ‘Joash was seven years old when he became king.’ This naturally is striking and can challenge you. He had a mentor and priest that helped guide him named Jehoiada, that it states, while he was instructing him, Joash stayed right in the Lord’s eyes. Things didn’t always go right, but to be faithful to the Lord while you have family around you shows something.

I am very passionate about the fact that we have been created for family. Family that is the body of Christ. Allowing vulnerability and being teachable means that you are allowing yourself to grow. You are allowing truth to sink in, as well as learning discernment. The devil wants you to isolate and try and complete things alone. Allowing pride to come in that disconnects you from God.

God wants unity and requires it for his covenant with us. We need to have unity with Him first, then from there, we can have unity with others. He doesn’t want you to try and do life in a bubble that makes you completely independent. He wants boldness in relationships with the whole body of Christ.

‘…that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in me, and I am in You. May they also be in us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.’ (John 17:21)

Jesus, thank you so much for the way you have given us the example of Unity. Thank you for the gift of others that can help guide us towards you always, that brings in accountability. God, show us today where we need to be vulnerable and allow others in to help us. Keep us pure in your eyes Lord. Thank you that Iron sharpens Iron, so that we can remain sharp. May others see you through our unity?
