2 Kings 9:14 - 10:17 Worth of a Witness

by fol CHURCH on October 17, 2020

“You know the man and the sort of things he says,” Jehu replied. “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.” Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’(2 Kings 9:11b-12)

Jehu was hesitant to tell his fellow officers what Elisha's messenger said. Maybe he didn’t believe the prophet’s words, didn’t want to be associated with that ‘maniac’ or didn’t feel like he was up for the task the Lord was anointing him for. In the end, He shared the message with his officers - and they validated it by declaring Jehu king over Israel. In the passage for today, we read about Jehu fulfilling the Lord’s word by killing Ahab’s descendants and widow. Jehu, the terrifying warrior, was definitely up for the task he was anointed for. And through him, God cleansed Israel.

Sometimes we feel like God challenges us to do something while we are not fully convinced about it. Jehu was placed in a community that encouraged him to take the Lord’s word seriously, even though it seemed to be too much to take in. The role of his peers was essential! Like Jehu we are placed in a community to encourage each other but also to hold each other accountable. Where do you feel like a witness for confirmation or second person to hold you accountable to help you follow His word would be helpful?

Lord, I step into your presence now to listen. I want to open my senses and my heart for your word. Please guide my thoughts and confirm your speaking. Show me, where I need someone to help me follow your word. Thank you for the community of witnesses.
