2 Peter 2:1 – 22 Beware False Prophets

by fol CHURCH on November 14, 2018

In this chapter Peter talks about false prophets. He says there were false prophets in the days of the prophets of the Old Testament, and there are false prophets today.

Peter says they will try to bring false teaching into the Church, and some people will follow them; but their judgment awaits them. He says if God did not spare the angels who fell, and if He did not spare the ancient world but sent a flood on them (Genesis 6); and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and if He rescued Lot (Genesis 19) then God knows how to bring judgement on the sinners and how to rescue the righteous.

Peter says that the false prophets are arrogant, and blasphemers and they will be paid back with harm for the things they have done. These men are sinners and have wandered off the narrow path, just as Balaam did, and God used his donkey to rebuke him (Numbers 22).

Peter continues to talk of these men in very negative terms, some of them have seen the light of Christ and have gone away from it; Peter says it will be better for them than if they had not known Christ at all.

False prophets, as Peter says, have been trying to pull Father God’s children away from Him from the very beginning of time. This is how the evil one hurts Father God most of all. We are His beloved children and He cares so much for us. Father God wants to be in relationship with each of us, individually and because of this, the enemy will try to prise us away from our heavenly Father.  He is Father God’s enemy and will do what He feels necessary to cause Father God the most pain. So, we must be aware of these people and what they are trying to do. However, if we walk by the Spirit of God then He will tell us who to be careful of. It is important that we follow the way of Christ and do not listen to those who would try to take us away from our heavenly Father.

Peter tells us that true freedom is freedom from sin, from having the power of the risen Christ in our lives so that we can make the choice not to sin, but to follow the way of Christ.

If we follow the Lord Jesus then we have this power and the choice every day, to shun the worlds way and follow the way of God.
