Ephesians 6:1 – 24 God’s Heart for Work

by fol CHURCH on October 15, 2018

Verse 5 especially stands out today but changing the context from slaves to employees makes it more relevant. We need to have a mind-set that dedication to our jobs needs to reflect God’s dedication. He works diligently in us and has done since the beginning of creation - we need to follow His example because our work and good attitudes can speak volumes to those around us. It's all part of putting others before us.

Paul also gives instructions for slave owners (employers). God doesn't want anyone in authority to use threats. God doesn't threaten His children, He warns us of the consequences of their actions because He loves us and doesn't want us to harm ourselves.  In the Bible when we see “if you...” and a clear explanation of what will happen it’s no more a threat than “if you put your hand in a fire, you'll get burned.”

Paul ends his letter by revealing that we're not fighting against slave owners, people in authority or those who are “walking in darkness” but against things we can't see but he counsels us what to do.

The belt of truth, knowing who we are in Jesus allows us to stand strong, stand tall, be strengthened. The breastplate of righteousness, knowing that God has made us righteous allows the lies that get thrown at us to glance off; it covers us; it’s noticeable; shiny; looks different to those around us and restricts some of the things we do because our covering won't allow it. The shoes of peace, being ready to share and show the gospel, praying continually, reminding ourselves of who He is so we don't need to change gear when opportunities arise. The shield of faith, knowing that God is good and for us, that He'll use our situations for good, throwing truth back at the lies thrown at us as Jesus did when tempted. How often do we call ourselves “idiot!” when we make a mistake, how many lies about ourselves do we speak out loud? We need to deflect those lies with truth. (See Ps 139.) The sword of the spirit, The Word and truth when meditated on and spoken out loud is sharper than a two-edged sword. Praying continually, reading and sharing the word will strengthen our sword arm so we can be effective and cut through lies and perform surgery on those around us who are crying out for a surgeon's scalpel.

Father, help me to have a renewed attitude about my work so I can glorify you.  Remind me of the full armour that is at my disposal and help me to never take it off so I am always ready.  Amen.
