Job 38:1-38:41 The God Of All Sizes

by fol CHURCH on April 07, 2019

We’ve had almost 37 chapters of all kinds of attacks towards Job and towards God. Finally, God speaks, not in the ‘still small voice’ but in the whirlwind which I would assume is to get everyone’s attention and here, God describes who He is, the wonderful things He has done and continues to do.

And in the whirlwind we learn that He isn’t a God who just made creation and left it, He created it and sustains it, but He isn’t only the God of yesterday and today, He is the God of the future (v22-23) too.  He is present and close, caring and tending the world and preparing it for what is to come.

Reading these verses you get a wonderful picture of the enormity of God.  All of time and space is created by Him and he sustains it all!!  But He isn’t just a ‘Big Picture’ God, the saying is “the devil’s in the details” NO!  GOD is in the details, look “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the surveying line?” (v4-5), “Who provides food for the ravens when their young cry out to God and wander about in hunger?” (v41).  I love how our God is the God of the big and the small and part of that “small” is you and me!  God cares enough to direct the lightning, how much more does he care and want to direct our lives. I love the verses where it talks about wisdom and intuition in v36. He's put part of what makes Him Him, into us so we are equipped to live in the way He intended so even when we're feeling distant, if we listen to that quiet voice inside, we'll know what to do.

Vs 39-41 remind me of the verses in Matthew 6:25-34. He directs our path, gives us wisdom but also nurtures and provides for us, giving us good things when we all or are in need. He won't give us bad things if we ask for good things. In fact I believe that if we ask for things that may unintentionally be bad, he'll gives us something better and at a better time.

Thinking about all these verses really makes me realise that God really is the best one to be in control. I need to remember that when things don't go my way that it's very possible that God is redirecting me to something better (for me and for others), something part of His bigger plan for the whole world.

Almighty God, thank you that you are in control of all things, the big and the small. Please help me to remember that you are always good and help me see your hand directing my life in my disappointments.  Amen
