Matthew 13, Luke 8 When Turmoil Breaks

by fol CHURCH on January 21, 2022

One of the great things about attempting to follow the story of Jesus as it happened is that you start to experience a bit more of the pattern of events that He lived and worked through. There are some variations in the way that the gospels are recorded but these stories are in the Bible because they cross reference each other and their evidence corroborates itself.

Today’s passages reveal one of the great truths of Jesus’ ministry. In all the places He went wherever He encountered evil it was exposed rather like walking into a dark room and you turn on the light you see everything that is hidden in the darkness. In amongst His teaching and parables we see this pattern emerging that everywhere he goes something of His light is shone into some very dark places. Evil spirits seemed unable to keep quiet. They speak out asking “What do you want with me, Son of God?” They knew who He was and they knew He was more powerful than they could ever be. They knew that if He spoke they would lose their grip and be cast into a place that was too horrible for the most evil of spirits to contemplate. They would plead with him to be given a different option instead of being sent back to hell. “Send us into the pigs” they would cry because that was preferable to the alternative.

Evil broke away when Jesus ministered to people. Sicknesses diseases and death lost their grip, His teaching released fresh understanding to those who were prepared to listen and new life sprang up in the places where He found people who wanted to know about God. But to those who didn’t want to know nothing seemed to be able to penetrate their darkness. They were closed books with ideas that were too deeply entrenched to come out. Jesus broke people out of their turmoil and set them free to live life in abundance when they were prepared to receive Him.

Things to think about:

What would happen if Jesus were to walk into one of our overcrowded hospitals now? Do you think everyone be healed and restored?

Does the prospect of evil spirits in the world worry you or are you confident that your faith in the one who has overcome is enough to keep you safe?

Help us Lord Jesus to be Your lights in the darkness. Equip us with wisdom and power in the presence of Your Holy Spirit. Bless us to know Your perfect will in all things. For the glory of the Kingdom. Amen.
