(This Passage is also referenced in 2 Kings 18:1-12)

In the previous chapter, the people doubled their worship. God had prescribed a 7 day period to mark the Passover but the people continued for an additional 7 days.

In this chapter, we see King Hezekiah wisely investing in the continuation of the Temple worship by arranging and organising the priests and Levites into groups and assigning them their places and functions. The gift of administration, often overlooked, is vitally important for the continuation of group worship – thank God for those who make the rotas and organize the church into functioning groups to carry out the work of the Lord.

Hezekiah also calls the people to bring the tithes of their harvests to support the ministry (v.4). The people respond with abundant generosity – beginning shortly after the Passover, they bring the first fruits of their livestock and land successively all through the summer as each new crop harvests, until the last grape harvest in the seventh month (Feast of Tabernacles). “They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything” (v.5). Their joyful giving resulted in huge piles of food and resources – the harvest had been abundant and the people were so generous with their “contributions, tithes and dedicated gifts” (v.12) – there was enough to support all the ministers in the Temple as well as plenty left over.

Doubling their worship, good administration, and abundant generosity results in not only enough to sustain the ministry of the Temple, but in plenty left over.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit for creative ways to express exuberant worship – how can you increase your worship, not because you have to but because you want to!
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to help you be a good administrator of your resources. Do you have gifts and abilities that you could use to serve the Kingdom? Have you thought about joining a team at church that serves in a certain area? Do you need to prune some areas in your life to allow other areas to flourish?
  • Ask the Lord to check your heart concerning your finances. Let him show you anything you need to adjust.

Lord, give us a heart of abundant generosity, so those who minister and serve us in your Kingdom will be amply provided for with more than enough left over!
