This passage is the Messiah speaking to His people, Israel.

In verses 1 and 2, the Messiah, (the Lord Jesus) is telling of His call and preparation for service. Although the Lord Jesus was called from before the foundation of the earth, here He is using a term that man can easily relate to – “from the womb”. Verses 3 and 4 are the Messiah speaking of His confidence in the LORD (Father God). Then, the Lord Jesus, in verses 5 – 7 blesses Israel and the rest of the world.

When we get to verses 8 to 12, the LORD is speaking of the glory of the Lord Jesus’ ministry; verses 15 – 18 tell us of the Father’s love for Israel, and finally verses 19 – 26 tell us of the blessings that He will pour out on Israel.

This whole passage speaks of the love God has for Israel, and the love the Father has for the Son. Verse 15 is particularly poignant, and a verse that we can so easily relate to.

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast

and have no compassion on the child she has borne?

Though she may forget,

I will not forget you!”

But just as the Father loves Israel, so He also loves the rest of the world; as He loves the Messiah, so He loves us. He showed us this when He sent this Messiah to be our Saviour.

John 3 verse 16 tells us, “God So loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall have eternal life”. We cannot argue with that. We are as precious to Father God as His own dear Son, so we can claim verses 15 and 16 of our passage for today for ourselves, “They may forget, but I will not forget you. I have engraved you on the palms of My hands”. Father God’s love for us is eternal and it is constant. Every second of every day we are on His mind, He is with us wherever we go, and He is constantly watching over us.

Although this passage is the Messiah speaking to Israel, it is also the Father speaking to us. We must never forget that God is always with us, He never leaves us and we are always on His heart.

Prayer: Father God, help me to remember today that You are with me all the time. You never leave me on my own. Amen.
