“They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear” (12:2).

As I write this, Hurricane Irma has caused devastation across areas including the Caribbean, Cuba and Florida.  In Florida especially, once it was clear what the scale of the storm would be, and people were clearly shown what the storm would look like once it arrived, evacuation orders were issued for several million residents to leave their homes.  This was mainly to ensure their safety during the storm, but also afterwards, when services and supplies were disrupted, and while help was difficult to administer.  Yet some stayed put, perhaps because they didn’t believe what they had seen or been told, or from the sense of security they had from ‘staying put’ in their own homes, or from ‘toughing it out’ (or even quietly hoping it would just go away).

We know that people doubt what they see and what they hear: think of Thomas who needs to see and to feel before he can believe. We know that Jesus said in John 20:29, “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed”.  It is natural, too, to want to ‘put things off’ until later.

Instructed by God, Ezekiel shows the prince in Jerusalem and the house of Israel (v.3-7) what will happen to them; that is, they will go into exile as captives, and be scattered across the nations. The prince, trying to escape through a hole in a wall, will be captured and exiled.  False prophecies, and the perpetuating belief that these falsehoods were right, will cease because it will be shown that God’s promises are fulfilled and the punishment of the house of Israel is certain: “I will fulfil whatever I say” (12:25).

Importantly, these things would come to pass soon (they did – after 6 years according to my Bible notes).  We should not doubt that what God says is sure to happen will happen (see v.25-28).  We should also be warned about putting things off for later: if there is something to get right, it might be wise to do it sooner rather than later!

Take some time to consider whether there is anything important you have been putting off and whether the time has come to take action.
