Today we go back to the beginning, before the beginning and find that Jesus is there waiting for us there, before anything else was created, Jesus was. Just reading this, you know that Jesus is no ordinary man, we find that He is part of the ‘us’ mentioned at creation “Let us make man is our image…”   We also get a sense of Jesus’ power, “ALL things were made and came into existence through Him” and that “In Him was life and the life was the light of men.”  – We get a description of who Jesus is and what He is going to do right from the beginning of the chapter.

John (who wrote this) then talks about John the Baptist.  John was there to prepare the way for Jesus and what a job he had after so many years of silence following the prophecies of Isaiah and Malachi. John was there to say “He’s coming” and then finally to point to Jesus and say “This is the one we’ve been waiting for.” and for those who recognised Him, “He gave the right to become children of God”.

I love how John puts what Jesus has done for us in verse 16 “For out of His fullness [the superabundance (what a fantastic word!!) of His grace and truth] we have all received grace upon grace [spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing, favour upon favour, and gift heaped upon gift].”  WOW!!!  (don’t you just love the Amplified version).  Jesus gave us so much – He gave us a revelation of the Father but He also ‘heaped’ grace upon us, loving everyone He encountered but the challenge is, He came to model how to live.  We are to allow Jesus’ light to shine out of us, we are to encourage others that they can become adopted sons and daughters and we are to heap grace upon grace to those around us even if they reject us.

Jesus gave out grace knowing full well He’d be rejected and nailed to a cross. He did it anyway so I feel challenged in the way I live.  Do I give to people (time, money, love) even though I know I may be rejected?  Jesus treated everyone equally (lovingly) and we’re to live like Him.

Ask God that through His Holy Spirit you will be someone who gives out ‘superabundantly’ to those you encounter (Jesus’ grace is one of the things about Him that drew people towards Him) – Ask for a humility to walk like Jesus and think ‘What Would Jesus Do’ before you speak or act.  The more you do it, the easier it becomes.
