John 15 Bearing Fruit in Christ: A Mission of Love and Perseverance

by on April 16, 2024

In John 15 Jesus uses the analogy of the vine and branches to illustrate the intimate connection between believers and Himself.    Jesus emphasizes the necessity of abiding in Him, the true vine to bear fruit. Brother Yun, known as the “Heavenly Man”, exemplifies this principle through his unwavering faith and reliance on Christ amidst intense persecution.  Despite imprisonment, torture, and constant danger, Brother Yun remained connected to Christ drawing strength and resilience from Him.  His fruitful ministry marked by countless conversions and miraculous interventions, testifies to the power of abiding in Christ.

In v.18 – 19, Jesus warns His disciples of the world’s hostility towards them because of their association with Him.  Brother Yun’s life mirrors this reality as he endured persecution and rejection for his faith.  Like the apostles, he considered it a privilege to suffer for Christ’s sake, recognising that persecution is an inevitable aspect of discipleship.  His steadfastness in the face of opposition serves as a challenge and inspiration to believers worldwide.

In v.20-27, Jesus forewarns His disciples of the challenges they will encounter in their mission.  He reminds them that the world will hate them because they do not belong to the world but have been chosen by Him.  Despite the hostility they may face, the disciples are encouraged by the promise of the Holy Spirit, who will empower and guide them in their witness.

Like Brother Yun, as disciples of Christ, may we embrace our mission with courage and determination, trusting in His promise to be with us always.

Questions:

How can we deepen our connection to Christ amidst challenges and trials, following Christ’s and Brother Yun’s example?

Prayer:

Father we thank You for the privilege of being called Your disciples and for the mission You have given us.  Help us remain connected to Christ, bearing fruit that glorifies Your name.  Grant us strength and perseverance to endure persecution and opposition, knowing that You are with us.  May Your Holy Spirit empower and guide us as we seek to lead non-believers to Christ. Amen.
