John’s letter is a model for us to follow and he talks about contrasts - the new and old command; loving the father and loving the world; Christ and anti-Christ; truth and lies.
The old command that John refers to is found in Leviticus 19:18 “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people but love your neighbour as yourself. I am the Lord.” The new command can be found in John 13:34,35 “A new command I give you: love one another as I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”
In our world it is not just about what other people see us do, it is also relating to our attitude to our world and the people that live in it. Do we love God by showing generosity, being self-controlled, and committing to humble service? Do we reflect God’s values in our actions?
John warns us against following and being tempted by false Christians, these are the antichrists who could lead us away from the one true god. We need to ensure that we pray that the Holy Spirit will protect us from these others so that we will not be deceived. Don't settle for less - allow yourself to have a personal relationship with Jesus and become a trustworthy follower. Christ’s way is the only way to eternal life.
God has given us the Holy Spirit and if we fully receive him, we can be protected from the lies in our world that can lead us into temptation. Receive him and be blessed!

Action:
Do you believe that you are saved? - There is a track on a Christian album called Mission 3:16 by an artist called Carman. The track is called The Courtroom – it’s a powerful song describing how we will be in front of God on Judgement Day. The Devil will list all our sins so that we will perish in hell… and then up steps Jesus to rescue us! You can find this on Spotify and YouTube if you want to hear it.
Prayer:
Loving Father – help us to follow your command of loving all of those around us, not just in thought but also in deed. Help us to demonstrate heaven on earth as you desire. In your Holy Name – Amen.
