1 Samuel 3 Hearing God’s Voice

by on March 20, 2023

So often in the scriptures it takes a number of messages from God in order for someone to get the point! For Samuel, the word from God came four times in the night. Three times he ran to Eli thinking it was him… I don’t know about you but if I was Eli I would have found this very annoying! Thankfully Eli showed a lot more wisdom than some of us, and instead of getting frustrated with young Samuel he gave him some advice that would come to define the whole calling upon the boy’s life… He encouraged him to say to the voice: “Speak for your servant hears.” (v.9)

The task to recognise and respond to the voice of God in our lives is one of the most important and challenging we will face. I don’t know about you but I need all the help I can get! In Samuel’s case it was Eli, I wonder who it is in your life that helps you discern God’s voice?

The truth is hearing God’s voice is rarely going to be solely a moment between you and Him. Yes, it may be personal, but we need faithful brothers and sisters around us who are going to help and guide us into what we sense God might be saying.

Next time you get to a tricky Bible passage, or feel that God might perhaps be leading you in a particular direction, grab a couple of faith-filled brothers and sisters to pray and discern with you seeking God’s will in it all. Find an Eli!
