When I first read through this chapter, in preparation for writing these notes, Paul’s comment in verse 11 really stood out to me and I had to re-read it and reread it again before I really read the words properly. “Such people should realise that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.”
The statement in itself is not difficult but it’s the word ‘actions` that jumped out. Because Paul’s letters always pack a punch and yet he makes reference here to his timidity I felt there was a contradiction. Yet when I noticed that it was the boldness of his actions when present that was key. As apostles of Christ, we should be bold in what we do, using not the weapons of the world, but the spiritual and heavenly weapons we are given. That could mean using love instead of hate, kindness instead of violence or concern instead of disregard.
Paul makes reference in verse 7 to the fact that some in the Corinthian church are concerned with outward appearance rather than their inner attitudes and mindset. God knows and sees the colours of our hearts and we should strive to keep the commandments He gave us to keep the colour constant. Ultimately, we are all apostles of Christ, our actions should always speak louder than anything we may have to say and people, I hope and pray, will see something in us that reflects Christ’s love for all humanity, especially those parts of humanity considered to be unreachable or untouchable. After all, “we all, like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all” Isaiah 53:6.
Paul wanted the respect of the Corinthian Christians, but he wanted it for their sake, not his own. He knew they were hurting their own spiritual growth and maturity by rejecting him. But as for himself, Paul was satisfied with the approval that came from the Lord. We should be satisfied with that too.

Prayer:
Dear Lord. I want to live my life for You. By your word and in faith reflecting all that You are to the world around me. I ask that you give me a right heart and a willingness to witness for You whenever I can and wherever I am. Amen.
