2 Corinthians 12 Get Naked - God Will Clothe You with Divine Power

by on August 12, 2024

Paul clarifies the contrast between human strength and God’s power.  Paul’s personal experience of weakness reveals a divine truth: God’s power is made perfect in our weakness.  This message, echoed throughout Scripture, invites us to reframe our understanding of strength and reliance on God.

Paul recounts a “thorn in the flesh” given to him to prevent pride.  Despite pleading with the Lord to remove it, God’s response was transformative: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”. This profound revelation led Paul to embrace his weaknesses, boasting in them so that Christ’s power may rest upon him.

This theme resonates throughout the Bible. In Isaiah 40:29-31, we read, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak…those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. “Psalm 73:26 declares, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” These verses and the passages in Judges 7 underscore the centrality of divine strength in our lives.

In our culture, self-reliance and personal strength are celebrated, Paul’s message is countercultural.  It challenges us to recognise our limitations and depend on God’s limitless power.  It is in our moments of total surrender that we experience the fullness of God’s grace and strength.

Questions:

In what areas of my life am I relying on my own strength rather than seeking God’s power and grace?

How can I embrace my weaknesses as opportunities for God’s power to be displayed in my life?

What practical steps can I take to deepen my trust in God’s sufficiency and allow His strength to work through my weaknesses?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you that Your grace is sufficient for us and Your power is made perfect in our weakness. Help us rely on You in all areas of our lives. Grant us comfort and confidence in knowing that You are our source of true power and sustenance. In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
