2 Samuel 14:14 says, "Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But that is not what God desires; rather, He devises ways so that a banished person does not remain banished from Him."
This verse comes from a moment when a wise woman from Tekoa speaks to King David, urging him to reconcile with his estranged son, Absalom. She uses the imagery of spilled water—once poured out, it cannot be gathered again. This illustrates the finality of death and the importance of seizing opportunities for reconciliation before it's too late.
The woman emphasises that God does not desire to keep people separated from Him. Instead, He actively seeks ways to bring back those who are estranged. This reflects God's nature as one who values restoration and forgiveness. He doesn't give up on the banished; He devises means to bring them back into relationship with Him.
In our own lives, we may have relationships that are strained or broken. We might feel justified in keeping our distance due to past hurts or betrayals. However, this verse challenges us to consider God's example. If He, the perfect and holy God, seeks to restore the banished, shouldn't we also strive for reconciliation in our relationships?
