22nd February Deuteronomy 8 Moses Warns
Scholars believe the book of Deuteronomy was written during the lifetime of Moses itself, at the end of the 40th year in the wilderness, which is dated as 1428 BC.
He begins by reminding the Israelites of the Lord’s promises of prosperity in the new found land of their ancestors. God remained steadfast as He led the people during their time in the wilderness. Though they knew hunger and hardship, God looked after them and provided for their needs as a loving father does.
Moses speaks with authority warning the people they must obey God’s law, be steadfast in obedience and fear Him diligently for His promises are good and He will bring the people into a land which is plentiful, they shall not want for anything, a land rich in food, water and abundant resources. Moses continues, directing the people that when they have had their fill, they are to remember and be thankful to the one who provided the bounty, to obey His laws, commands and decrees otherwise in their moments of abundance they will become proud and arrogant and forget the Lord.
The author emphasises the need to remember what the Lord is doing in their lives and that the covenant he entered into with their ancestors He is living out in their present day. He has delivered them from slavery and provided them with food and water where they believed none existed. Do not forsake the Lord and turn to false gods because as it was before, He will surely destroy you for not obeying Him.

Prayer:
Lord, this account teaches us the value of always putting our trust in you, even when we are going through times of hardship. Heavenly Father, help us to always rely on you and believe that you are in control of all things. Amen.
