9th February Exodus 19 A Holy People

9th February                                                 Exodus 19                                                      A Holy People

“Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.  Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation”. (v.5-6)

I have great enjoyment reading the O.T. because I find it particularly fascinating how often it seems to be a foretelling of a fulfilment that doesn’t come until the N.T.!

At this point in the journey of the Israelites, we see then arriving in the desert of Sinai, camping at the foot of the mountain.  God reminds them through Moses, what He has done to Egypt, and how He ‘carried them’ to bring them to Himself (See Is 40:31)

What comes across very clearly in this passage, is the Holiness of God, accentuated by the Lord descending to the mountaintop with fire, accompanied by thunder, lightning, and a terrible earthquake (v.16-19).  He gives Moses clear instructions to warn that anyone or anything which touches the mountain will surely be put to death.  Only Moses, joined by Aaron, were allowed to ascend the mountain.

This passage graphically reminds us that we have a God who is totally holy.  How amazing is it therefore, that we can have a personal relationship with such a Holy God! (See 1 Pet 2: 4 -10).

Questions

Do we take the freedom we have in Christ for granted and forget the Holiness of God? How does the Holiness of God and Peter’s observance (1 Pet 2: 4 – 10) impact us today?

Pray:

Heavenly Father – Let me never take for granted the freedom I have through your son, that I can have a personal relationship with such a Holy God!  Help me to indeed become part of the royal priesthood and holy nation that you are building. Amen.
