“I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.”
This promise was given to the Israelites as they were on their journey to the Promised Land. God’s promise in this verse was reassurance that He would protect their land and possessions allowing them to focus on worship without worry or concern. The directive here is to trust God and underscores the principle that when God’s people prioritise Him He takes care of their needs.
For Christians today, this verse serves as a reminder that when we prioritise worship and obedience to God He takes care of our needs. This should encourage us to trust God’s provision and protection even when following His commands requires us to step out in faith and leave behind what might seem secure. It challenges us to consider how we can put God first in our lives trusting that He will handle all the little details and keep what is important to us safe. Trusting God with our worries and concerns while we focus on Him is still relevant in our daily walk with God. This can be particularly challenging when we encounter especially difficult and dark times in life. I know from my own experience that when dark and difficult moments arise in life it is easy to blame God, to abandon Him and try to deal with the situation on my own. We are also more likely to forget those times in life when God has been evident during a crisis and we have not acknowledged His continuing faithfulness and given Him the praise and the glory. Jesus teaches us that we should not worry about our needs as He knows and provides for them (Matthew 6:25-34).
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.”
