Exodus 4 The Signs

by on January 29, 2023

If you’ve ever had to give a talk or a speech somewhere you’ll know how daunting the experience can be. By his own admission Moses struggled to get his words out, he wasn’t a great orator or a good leader…yet. In essence his response to the call God had put on his life was “Here I am send, someone else please!” I’ve thought the same things when I’ve had to stand up and speak in front of people so I don’t blame him.

The trouble was that God had a plan and that plan involved Moses doing certain things. Leading a nation was top of the list and that meant he had to go to Egypt and tell Pharaoh, the most powerful leader in the region at the time, to let the Israelite people go. Moses knew that the request wouldn’t be well received. If this mission was successful it could easily destroy the Egyptian economy which had come to rely on the Hebrew slaves to carry out a huge part of the necessary work in their culture.

It’s easy to shrink from a task – even a God given one - it’s easy to put God and His plans in a small box that denies how powerful He really is. But simply saying, “No, this is too big a job for me” doesn’t give God the room to work through us. Despite our reservations He is always bigger than we are, He can see further ahead and He can bring His influence to bear in ways that we cannot even begin to contemplate. The signs God gave Moses should have been enough to fill him with the confidence to get the job done but they didn’t. Moses just wrapped God’s power and might in a box labelled fear and asked God to find someone else.

Question:

Have you ever put God in small box and hoped He’d go away or leave you out of it?

Prayer:

Strengthen our faith in You Lord God so that we might always move in accordance with Your plans and purposes, walking in the power of Your influence as we go. May Your will be done in us. Amen.
