Hebrews 1:1-2:7 Begin Today with Jesus!

by fol CHURCH on November 16, 2018

Every New Testament letter up to Hebrews starts with almost the same verse and often the same word: Paul. Hebrews doesn’t.  Lots has been written about the writer and also who the Hebrews were because the title of the letter was not clear either. Some say it was written by Priscilla of Priscilla and Aquila fame, a theory I’m delighted about, but whatever the answer is we can all agree that the style of writing isn’t Paul’s.

The letter starts with Jesus! It simply celebrates him. Verses 1-4 need us simply to settle down and worship! They explain God’s wonderful salvation plan. They remind us that God speaks, He has spoken and He’s going to continue to speak: this is our God!

He speaks through JESUS and Jesus in turn speaks and those words create the world (1.2) no, sorry The Universe.....everything with just a word! And He keeps it going (sustaining) with a word! And then the writer reminds us that it’s Jesus’ death and resurrection that has transformed us too, the whole Gospel concentrated into one little phrase for the moment “provided purification for our sins” 1.3 and its completeness is emphasised by that picture of Jesus having a sit down after all He’s done, taking us back to the first Sabbath rest on Day 7 of the Creation: this is how it’s meant to be, this is completion.

You can probably tell I love theses verses! So let’s just linger here. This is what we need for today, to remember and reabsorb the huge work that or God has done for all of us. And it’s not just the work but it’s also the WORD; He says it and it happens, the world is MADE! He calls forth a universe where nothing was before, just with a word.

And we are friends with HIM. Wait on that.

We are friends with the One who simply has to say a word. A word to transform, a word to heal, a word to restore.

Jesus, bring your Life into our lives today!

And He also speaks His word to us, reveals Himself to us.

Take this picture with you today! If He sustains the Universe with a word, He will sustain you. From the beginning of time Jesus has done all things well (Mark 7.37.) and He will continue. His work of forgiveness and purification was done and completed on the Cross and is still completed today and still completed in you. Think on these things! And rejoice as you go out and live for Jesus today.
