21st May Isaiah 26:3 Don’t Worry About a Thing…
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
I really like the Bob Marley hit that begins “Don’t worry about a thing. Cos every little thing’s gonna be alright”. It really echoes that sentiment of what’s the point of worrying, it won’t change anything. Indeed, Lord Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 6:25-34, ‘what is the use of worrying…...’. Here, in this verse, God is speaking the same advice to His people by telling them they will have no need to worry if they focus on Him. Faith in Him alone is all we need to remove anxiety or worry from our lives. For some, me included, we may use medicines prescribed by our doctors to combat anxiety. I am not advocating anyone stops using such treatments, but I am advocating that God knows you better than you know yourself and He will keep you in perfect peace if you are steadfast or faithful to Him. The dictionary defines ‘steadfast’ as being resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering. That’s how our faith should be. I think it defines the connection between human faithfulness and divine peace.
This verse emphasises the profound connection between trust in God and experiencing inner peace. It highlights the concept that having a steadfast mind rooted in faith leads to a state of perfect peace. This peace transcends external circumstances and reflects the deep trust and confidence one has in God’s ability to guide and protect us. The verse suggests that when we wholeheartedly place our trust in God and maintain a steadfast focus on Him, we are rewarded with a sense of tranquillity and calmness in our hearts and minds.
The phrase “perfect peace” in this verse is particularly striking. It suggests a completeness and wholeness that is not just the absence of conflict but a profound sense of inner tranquillity and well-being. This concept of peace, or “shalom” in Hebrew, encompasses health, security, and spiritual well-being. It’s a holistic peace that touches every aspect of life.
