John 12 Some Said it Thundered!

by on April 05, 2024

This chapter is a bridge between the 7 signs pointing to who Jesus is and John’s passion narrative which really kicks in from chapter 13 onwards. There is so much in this chapter so we’ll approach our study slightly differently today, studying it as we go. (It’s fine if you only have time to get to grips with one section today – study the bit that grabs your attention).

Read v.1-11 This is the third Passover mentioned by John in his Gospel (2:13;6:4). Lazarus reclines at table, Martha bustles and serves, Mary demonstrates her love in a seemingly wasteful act of extravagant and intimate love. Which response do you most identify with? How could you become more ‘wasteful’ in loving Jesus?

Slightly ironic that the religious authorities wanted to put to death the very person Jesus had just raised from the dead! They refused to accept that God was at work. Take time to recognise God at work in and around you. Recall the good things and recognise them as gifts from God. Give thanks for them.

Read v.12-26 We’re often told that the disciples did not really understand the call upon Jesus’ life to suffer and die (v.16). It is a call extended in some shape or form to each one of us who put our trust in Him. We don’t often talk about it in our conversations with not-yet believers. Yet, Jesus faces it head-on when he speaks to those brought to him by Philip and Andrew (v.23-26). How should this influence the way in which we present the Gospel? Does it encourage or challenge you in your own discipleship walk?

Read v.27-50 Jesus will draw all people to Himself (v.32). Do you have any no-go areas – people beyond redemption? Ask Him to soften your heart. Be alert for any unexpected prejudice that surfaces or the need to forgive.

Many acted out of fear of man rather than fear of God (v.42-43), preferring to preserve their reputation in the eyes of others rather than His. Fear can be insidious. It wraps itself around us on the inside and constricts the life out of us. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you if you are acting out of fear of man rather than God. Ask Him to increase the fear of God in you. (Read Psalm 33:6 as an encouragement).

As I implied at the beginning, today we have asked our questions as part of our study. Perhaps today take time to pray for members of your home group to grow in their walk as ‘children of light’ (v.36).
