John 2 What a Saviour

by on January 16, 2024

This chapter begins with the account of Jesus’ first miracle. A familiar passage with a huge feel good factor. The role Mary, His mother, plays is as she always was, very humble and can be missed easily. Mary knew from before conception that she bore the Messiah. A person the Israelites had been expecting and praying for centuries. In the few words spoken by her she acknowledges this and knows He can remove the massive embarrassment that would have been on the bridegroom were they to have actually run out of wine. In those days a wedding party was the party of all parties, and they often lasted for several days.

The fact that Jesus and all the disciples were at the wedding tells us that He and they were not perceived as party poopers. Quite the opposite they enjoyed having fun. Today Our God still wants us to have fun and enjoy life spreading His good news should be a pleasure not a chore. Mary simply says, ‘do whatever He asks you to do’. The servants attending comply and when the jars are filled with water and taken to the guests, wine is served from them. Of course, it’s not just wine it’s Gods’ own vintage and surpasses the best wines the guests have ever tasted. This should tell us that God wants to give us the very best!

From the wedding Jesus and His followers go to Capernaum and from there to Jerusalem. Here, He visits the temple and is angered to see the place being used as a market, for all forms of livestock and money lending. He famously clears them out of the temple only to be challenged by the Jews as to by what authority He has to do such a thing. Jesus’ famous response alludes to His own death, which He must have known was approaching, and says ‘Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days’.

We are His temple today and will continue to be the home of His Holy Spirit until He comes again in glory, when we shall live with Him forever in His glorious kingdom.

Question:

When you think or read about the miracles and wonders Jesus performed during His ministry, do you look beyond the material outcome of the miracle to see what God is saying to you about Himself and His desires for you?  If not maybe give it a go and see what He says to you.

Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, you alone are God and we are so thankful for your life on earth and all that you taught us. Please would you help me to know exactly what I need to know and learn from the miracles you performed when I read my bible. Speak to my spirit all that I need to know so that I can continue to be a living temple of Your love and for Your glory. Amen.
