I love this chapter in Luke. It has so much crammed into it that you really need to spend some quality time reading it and re-reading it so that you can absorb all of its goodness. I really want to focus on the post transfiguration section today though because there is a touch of impatience in Jesus’ voice as He deals with the evil spirit that’s been troubling the boy. “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you?” (v.41)
Jesus knew that His time with the disciples was getting short and He could see they were still struggling with the outworking of His teaching. They couldn’t heal this poor boy even after all the things they’d seen while they were out on mission – all the things they’d done in His name. All the things they’d done that would soon become the subject of an argument about which of them was the greatest.
Jesus needed to do a little retraining. (V47) He brought a young child into their midst and told them “You need to be like this child – humble!” It was a word designed to remind them who they were and where their authority had come from. None of them were great on their own they were only as good as the God who was working through them. Keep it humble was His word. It’s a word He would repeat to 72 others in Luke 10:20. Keep it Humble!

Questions:
Do you ever find yourself thinking that you’re good at praying or ministering to others? Do you celebrate a little too much when you see God answering a prayer? What is it that causes you to do that?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help us to remain humble at all times. To remember that while the power of heaven may flow through us it is not our will that is being done but our Father in Heaven’s will. We ask in Your name Lord. Amen.
