Mark 1 Highlighting the Word

by on January 10, 2024

Mark’s Gospel is a dynamic read. There is a real sense of immediacy and urgency captured in this opening chapter. Note for example: ‘at once’ (v.12,18), ‘without delay’ (v.20), news spread ‘quickly’ (v.28), ‘as soon as’ (v.29). We move swiftly through events at breakneck speed. There is much that is crammed into the narrative, a great deal left unsaid and as readers we are invited to use our imagination to colour in the detail and sense the sounds and sights.

There is a real undercurrent of excitement, anticipation and invitation into response and action. For example, the response to John baptising is everyone rushing out to see and hear (v.5) – not just to remain passive and unmoved but stirred to repentance and response. Those present at the time witnessed the Spirit of God coming upon Jesus and this extraordinary declaration of his identity (v.11).

In verses 14-15 we have the reason for Jesus coming: as King of the universe He comes to usher in the Kingdom or reign of God. The response? Well, to drop everything and follow him (v.18,20,45).

Read through the passage again. Which section in the narrative catches your attention? Is it the coming of John as a peculiar prophet to prepare the way; or Jesus being affirmed by the Father’s love; the calling of the first disciples; Jesus’ authority over evil spirits; the personal encounter with Simon’s mother-in-law; the crowds who gathered; Jesus as the early riser hearing the Father’s voice for the next step; or that leper healed and doing completely the opposite to Jesus’ command!

Remember Moses and the burning bush? It was simply a sign to arrest Moses and get his attention. So, remain in that section of the narrative asking God to highlight a particular word or verse for you today: it maybe an encouragement, a challenge or a mixture of the two.

Question:

How will you live differently today in the light of your discovery?

Prayer:

Sovereign Lord, as I study your word would you be my light and my guide and lead me deeper into your ways.
