Mark 11 Jesus has Authority

by on March 27, 2024

In this chapter we see 3 aspects of Jesus’ role in the world. King (v.1-11), judge (v.12-25) and prophet (v.27-33).

Jesus is recognised by the crowds as King as He ‘comes in the name of the Lord’ and brings the ‘kingdom of our father David’ (v.9-10). He then displays His power as judge as He cleanses the temple, clearing out the market traders and money-makers. His judgement here calls God’s people back to being a people of prayer that would be a light to other nations who are looking in (v.17). Finally, His authority is questioned and He shows His ability to speak and enact the word of God like the prophets of old. Jesus does not give them a straight answer but stumps them with a question that reveals their people-pleasing heart. John the Baptist brought truth and life as a prophet sent from God. And he was a foretaste of the truth and light found directly in Jesus who was not merely sent by God but was God come to us.

Jesus’ titles of King, Judge and Prophet might seem a little scary or overwhelming to us today. They remind us that Jesus is not simply our ‘mate’ but also holds all the power and deserves all the glory. His words and actions matter and we must take heed. What Jesus says and does is not simply ‘good advice’, but instead show us the only way to live life to the full, all other paths lead us astray.

He deserves our praise as King, our reverence as judge, and our attention as prophet. Which of these might he want to highlight to you today?

Question:

Which of these three titles do you tend to downplay or struggle with most? Why might that be?

Prayer:

Jesus, help me to take you on your terms and not on my own. Expand my vision of you are as God’s King, Judge and Word for us today. Amen.
