Mark 8 Jesus: His Enough is Enough

by on August 08, 2023

He is always enough. I believe this is the theme of this chapter of Mark – a set of fast paced stories connected by people who lack things: those who want more than they’re getting (the Pharisees?), those who don’t realise what they’ve got (the Disciples?).   Where do you fit in?

Jesus the Great Multiplier! I picture quite food-obsessed disciples bringing enough supplies for the preaching engagement but not enough to eat while they cross the sea. The message is the same: Jesus is enough. He is more than enough. “I nothing lack if I am His and He is mine forever” The disciples haven’t really grasped this – despite having to pick up lavish amounts of leftovers; the abundance actually passing through their hands! Yet despite that collective blindness, Peter realises exactly who Jesus is. His declaration seems to come out of his mouth possibly bypassing His brain, demonstrated immediately by his fear of Jesus falling into the hands of those who will kill him.

Many of us haven’t really grasped this either. Despite the fact that we can bear endless testimony to those amazing ‘coincidences’ and our encounters with the just plain miraculous. People who just gave us a car. Money put through our letterbox when we needed it or left in our car while we were in church. A man walking into our garden to ask us if he could buy our house.  When JESUS wants to move, HE moves in a physical, obvious way. Rejoice CHURCH He is more than enough.

The Pharisees say they haven’t seen enough. Demanding a further sign of Jesus credentials – a special sign for them – but of course Jesus has already done it. The responsibility is theirs to either accept Him or not. He has already shown His unending abundant power.

Question:

Are you more like the Pharisees or the disciples?

Prayer:

Jesus, help us to SEE and trust Your abundant goodness today and this week. Thank you that You are our Provider. Help us to see and rejoice in Your miraculous involvement in our lives and thank You that You will be enough for me today. Amen.
