Matthew 1 Roots

by on January 01, 2024

How much do you know about your heritage? My sister recently did a DNA test to see what our family origins are and we discovered that we are a mixture of Irish, Scottish and a little bit of English with a smattering of other nationalities that we’ve accumulated over the generations.

It’s easy to skip over the genealogies in the Bible because they don’t feel like they ours but they tell a story. In this case they tell us that the bloodline that Jesus was born into was ancient and pure. If you compare it with the one in Luke 3 you’ll notice they’re not quite the same but they still tell the same story. Jesus could trace his family line all the way back to Abraham and beyond that to Adam. His bloodline was intact all the way from the time of creation. All the way back to the time of the fall in other words. Through all the generations of trials, persecution, exile, restoration and favour God had kept his line intact.

Fascinating, isn’t it, that Jesus was born into the same bloodline that had caused the world to be corrupted by sin in the first place. The one who would undo generations of separation from God caused by sin came into the same family to restore that relationship for all of us. Such is the amazing power and oversight of God that He sees the end before the beginning has started. He sees how things can be worked out for good before we know it ourselves. He has already called us, sorted out our salvation for us and prepared a place for us in heaven if we choose to accept it. He is an amazing God.

Questions:

If we consider that every family on earth is connected in some way to the forest family of Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel. How do you feel about being a part of the family that Jesus was born into?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, that You that you have opened your arms and welcomed us in. Thank you that You came to save us even before we knew we needed You to do that. Help us to store this truth in the depth of our souls so that we might walk with You always. Amen.
