Wisdom might feel like an attribute we need to acquire in our utility belt for us to pull out at a moment’s notice to impress those around us, but in reality, God’s wisdom has far more of a relational dynamic.
Chapter 3 of Proverbs invites us to a way of wisdom that is about ‘love’, ‘faithfulness’, ‘trust’, ‘acknowledging’, ‘honour’ and ‘reproof’. It’s so tied up with how we relate to God and how he relates to us. It suggests that if we get the relationship right, wisdom will follow. Our primary focus should be on our relationship with God. That’s the key to unlock a life of wisdom.
The more we love Him, the more we are faithful to Him, the more we trust Him and honour Him, the more we will live our lives with wisdom. And, living in this right relationship means that we discover ‘favour’, ‘success’ (not defined by the way of the world!), ‘healing’, ‘refreshment’ and ‘plenty’.
So instead of thinking of wisdom as an attribute you have to learn or grab hold of, see it as an overflow of a love relationship between you and your heavenly Father. Spend time in his presence, talk with him, get to know his character and open your heart for him to move in your life. Live this way, and wisdom will surely begin to flow.
