Psalm 19 God’s Greatness

by on May 25, 2023

I have seen it written that this psalm is one of the most magnificent writings in the Bible, and indeed in all literature. This song, believed to have been written by King David, is divided into three parts: The creation of the heavens and earth that show Gods glory; the word that shows his grace; and then David praying for that grace.

Who can doubt that the creation of this world is not demonstrating Gods glory - look at how we are surrounded by the most astounding displays of nature at every turn! The beauty of a sunrise or a sunset, the first snowdrops of spring, the intricacy of a spider’s web on a frosty morning, the changing colour of the leaves on the trees in autumn – how blessed are we to live in a country where we can experience the shifting of the seasons so clearly. I do wonder how some people believe that the creation of the world all happened by chance. The voice of God speaks to us every day through the rising of the sun under which we live and work.

The psalm explains that as we read the word of the Lord our lives can also be changed. Laws are not always there to restrict us, they can “revive the soul”, “make us wise,” “give joy” and “give light to our eyes” (vs. 7-8). As a parent cares for their child, God provides us with guidance and love to direct us and help us to choose the right path. How many of us turn off that path at times and then realise the error of our ways?

If we follow God’s word and come to Christ and ask for repentance, then all our sins will be forgiven, even those we don't know we have committed. The more we dig into his word the more he will reward us.

Question:

Do we take our surroundings for granted or do we thank God for his wonderful creation and provision?

Prayer:

Read again verse 14 of this Psalm and use this as your prayer today.

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart

be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.
