Psalm 70 Dealing With Fear and Worry?

by fol CHURCH on February 15, 2020

Psalm 70 is almost a duplicate of Psalm 40,  attributed to King David who again is calling on God to rescue him from his enemies,  asking that they be “put to shame and confusion” v2.  Like Psalm 40 the writer is aware of his “poor and needy” situation but is also totally committed in trusting God for help and deliverance from danger. Fear can be a big problem for any of us, and as we get older we meet different challenges and more worries and fears for us to overcome!  David was completely convinced that God would rescue him from his difficult circumstances.  He knew that God was supporting him, but he did not have the knowledge and relationship of the Holy Spirit to comfort, guide and walk with him, as we do in our Christian walk.

Our Lord Jesus said a lot about fear and worry when teaching His disciples. John’s Gospel Chapter 14, for example:-  “Do not let your hearts be troubled.  Trust in God; trust also in me.  In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.  I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”  When we truly know and depend on the Holy Spirit in our lives we need not be afraid or worried.  Just as David called on God for His help, so that is our prerogative – “an exclusive right or privilege” to call out to Father God for His help, wisdom, guidance, forgiveness and His peace.

There are specific Scripture verses which are helpful when we are overwhelmed with fear or worry.  Consider Peter’s letters to the Christians in the time of the Emperor Nero – full of hope to those Christians facing terrible suffering and persecution, “Humble yourselves therefore under God’s mighty hand that He may lift you up in due time.  Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 4 v.6. It is good practice to have some helpful verses highlighted in our Bibles so we can access them quickly when in a place of fear or deep worry.  This also helps when helping someone else in a similar situation for then we are ready to pass on God’s wisdom which you know really works!

Dear God, like David sometimes I feel afraid and cannot make good decisions.  Through your Holy Spirit please help me know your presence and trust in your guidance and peace.
