There is so much going on this chapter that we can’t explore it all in this short reflection. But zooming in on v.6-10 we get this wonderful image of a marriage feast for the lamb (Jesus) and his bride (the church).
I love that this moment of God and humanity united together at last is described in the language of a meal! There’s something so inviting and woo-ing about this picture. The lamb is ushering us to his table to come and celebrate the victory he has won.
We know something of this as Christians in the meal we share together on Sundays. Communion is a meal by which we do three things:
- We look back to the sacrifice made by Jesus on the cross.
- We look around today as we receive the finished work of the cross for ourselves in the present moment.
- And we look forward as this communion table foreshadows a greater table, a greater welcome, the completion of the victory won at the cross.
How exciting that the same Jesus who meets us in communion on Sundays will meet us at the final wedding feast when all things are made new.

Questions:
Have you ever thought about communion as foreshadowing this future meal? Can you think of any liturgy we say together at communion that points to this future meal?
Prayer:
Jesus thank you for the two meals you have prepared for us. Remind us that the victory truly has been won and we will one day celebrate this reality with you at your table. Amen.
