This chapter is made up of Jesus’ own words to the first four churches He named yesterday, represented by the lamp stands John saw Him walking amongst.
The letters to the seven churches share a similar structure. They each feature:
- An address to a particular congregation.
- An introduction of Jesus.
- A statement about the condition of the church.
- A verdict from Jesus about the condition of the church.
- A command from Jesus to the church.
- A general exhortation to all Christians.
- A promise of reward.
We can see the state of each of these seven churches – and the state of our own walk with Jesus by looking at what Jesus has to say to each church in each section.
It shows us that Jesus, by the Holy Spirit, walks amongst His churches on earth. He notes the things which are being taught and judges the actions of the church. He considers whether the things being taught are correct and if the people are obedient to His commands. I hope you find this a great comfort, I do, knowing that Our Lord is not a distant God who is far off and not involved with the nitty gritty of our day to day lives. Rather He participates in the decisions we make and the things we do if we ask Him so to do. He won’t force you to do anything, but in His love, He wants the very best for us all if we will invite Him to be the centre our lives.
Jesus includes in all these letters the phrase “he who has an ear, let Him hear what the Sprit says to the churches.” This implies that the letters are for all to hear not just the leadership, or those who may be leading others to sin (like Jezebel in Thyatira). We all will stand before Him to account for what we have done or omitted to do.

Reflection:
Are you using the gifts God has given to you for the good of His children? Is there something you could do, no matter how small it may seem, that would be a good response to that thought?
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus. We thank you for your presence with us through your Holy Spirit. Please will you show me if there is a gift you have given to me which I don’t use. Give me the courage to use all my gifts for Your glory and to advance Your kingdom on earth. I ask for the wisdom to use my gifts with love and grace. Amen.
