Romans 3 The Same Boat

by on September 22, 2023

In April 1912 the Titanic hit an iceberg in the Atlantic during its maiden voyage to America. It suffered catastrophic damage and sank with the loss of approximately 1500 people’s lives. Those people were made up of the great and the good as well as those who had lived less perfect lives. Paul tells us that this is the fate of all mankind. That no matter who we are or what our background is we are all in the same boat. As he says in v.23 “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of the Lord.” There is no scale against which God measures our sin. He does not judge which of us is better than any other we are all just sinners who have not lived to the same standard that God lives to. We cannot compare with His glory or His standard of love.

As the Titanic sank lifeboats were lowered that saved a few of the stricken passengers others were lost to the icy sea. For each of us the same lifeboat is on offer – Jesus the Son of God who was sent to save us all. In a sea filled with many dangers and perils His is the only boat available to rescue us. He is the only one we can put our trust in to pluck us from the deep.

Paul taught that it is the same for all people no matter whether we are Jew or Gentile Jesus is the one who came to save us. It must have been hard for God’s chosen people to accept this word and to their peril many still haven’t. For these we must pray.

Question:

How much of your life do you consider to be holy and how much do you think is not? If you measure your life against the person of God in Jesus where do you see yourself?

Prayer:

Lord God, forgive each of us for our sins. Remind us each day that we are saved only by the blood of Jesus and bless us to walk faithfully with Him. Amen.
