This book of the Old Testament is not mentioned at all in the New Testament. On first read it may seem irrelevant to the history of the Israelite nation or of the words and directions God gave through the prophets. But if you read it with Solomon, the man and the Shulamite, the woman as God speaking to us individually as his bride to be, as indeed we are. As the church will be the bride Jesus will return to take for Himself. Then we can be immersed in the love that is shown and demonstrated in the words of this song.
The Hebrew translation to Song of Songs means the most beautiful song. I want to suggest not just a really beautiful song with amazing lyrics and heartfelt sentiments, but actually the most beautiful song ever. These are lyrics given by God to Solomon to write, to express His love for us, then and now, for which all the language I possess is totally inadequate to describe.
In this book the themes of love and sexuality dominate and is best understood as a poem that celebrates the wonder and power of love as a gift from God. It draws on a wide range of images and analogies from nature, making special use of images based of fruit, as it seeks to depict the joy of human love and the anguish of separation.
It may be called The Song of Songs, and be about Solomon, who as the son and successor of David, to whom the covenant of royalty had passed, as the founder of the temple, and as one that excelled in wisdom and wealth, was a type of Christ. In Him who is hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and yet we know there is one greater than Solomon; this is therefore a song concerning Him. Jesus, Holy Spirit and Father God.

Prayer: Dear Lord God. Thank you that your love is so complete and powerful. Help us never to forget that Your love is eternal and boundless. May we always know the love you place in our Hearts and the cost that was Christ’s in demonstrating Your perfect love for your people, of whom I am one. Amen.
